Il prezzo degli innocenti
Il Prezzo degli Innocenti: Come Il Vaticano Ha Sottratto Migliaia Di Bambini Alle Loro Madri (The Price of Children: How the Vatican Separated Thousands of Children from their Mothers) is the never-told story of how the Vatican and American Catholic Church sent nearly 4000 Italian children to the United States for adoption between 1950 to 1970. Thousands of unwed mothers, forced by religious and social pressure, relinquished their babies. Some mothers signed forms they didn’t understand; others were lied to, told their baby had died to smooth the adoption process. The children were allowed entry into the United States as refugees but the vast majority were children of unwed mothers taken from Italy’s numerous brefotrofi. Laurino’s investigation began after a revelation from her own family -- she discovered that her cousin had been one of these babies adopted from Italy.
Told through the voices of its perpetrators and victims, Il Prezzo degli Innocenti reveals stories of cruelty and corruption, of shameful decisions made by the powerful over the powerless. Beyond this shocking story, Il Prezzo degli Innocenti speaks to the legacy of patriarchy and how ancient Christian beliefs about female purity continue to affect women’s place in the world today. Translated by Alba Bariffi, il Prezzo degli Innocenti is Laurino’s first book to debut in Italy.
